between entrepreneur & influencer 2 min read
you can be a good entrepreneur without becoming a social media influencer,
and you can be a influencer without becoming a good entrepreneur.
these are two independent worlds.
influencer
just because someone has tons of followers and plenty of interactions doesn’t mean he/she is a good businessman / woman.
just because someone has small number of followers and minimal interactions doesn’t mean he/she is a bad businessman / woman.
someone can be a good influencer by:
- spend a lot of time in the social media
- have consistencies over time
(publish a post every x hour) - overshare his/her personal life
- post ragebait/clickbait headline
- mastering visual presentation
- recycling/repost other people’s [viral] posts
- leveraging on controversies & debates
- neverending engagements with followers
sure he/she can be a good at storytelling, branding, community building. but that doesn’t always translate to operations, strategy, even profitability.
entrepreneur
likewise,
many entrepreneurs quietly build their businesses in the background.
they spend their time building their businesses: hiring people, improving products, managing growth. all without looking for attention in socmed.
visibility & capability
visibility and capability are two different currencies.
one gives you attention.
the other gives you longevity.
there are people who good at storytelling, marketing themselves, creating perception, making inspiring posts which indeed are valuable skills.
but ….
running a company means dealing with cash flow, team conflicts, legal paperwork, customer complaints, product iterations, fundraising challenges, facing market unpredictability, decision making, and sleepless nights.
sometimes you’re too busy dealing with these that you don’t even have time to create a 30-second video, nor dealing with visibility algorithms. these are very different worlds.
entrepreneurs may not have of followers, they might only have 10 loyal customers, who trust them deeply. and these are enough to build a lasting business.
success doesn’t depend on social media visibility.
it does depend on execution.
do not mix
not everyone who looks successful online can run a business,
not everyone who can run a business needs to look successful online.
you don’t need to be a great influencer to be a great entrepreneur.
dont mix those two.
